Perform cut-and-fill volume calculation

You can perform cut-and-fill volume calculation in the Ortho Maker map viewer.

Volume calculation is a procedure in which the elevation of a landform surface is modified by the removal or addition of surface material. The Volume Calculation map tool summarizes the areas and volumes of change from a cut-and-fill operation. Using the digital surface model product and an area of interest (AOI) with a given base type, the tool identifies regions of surface material removal and addition.

A digital surface model product is required to perform volume calculation.

Determine AOI

The volume of the cut or fill activity is calculated for an AOI. You can define an AOI using the following methods:

  • Define the AOI on a map—Digitize one or more polygons on the map.
  • Import from a feature service—Import AOIs from a polygon feature service.
  • Import from a local file—Import AOIs from a local polygon feature class file.
Note:

AOIs are saved with the project file.

Calculate volumes

The three methods are described below.

Define the AOI on a map

To perform cut-and-fill volume calculation by defining an AOI on a map, complete the following steps:

  1. Click the Calculate Volume map tool Volume calculation toolon the toolbar.
  2. In the area of interest dialog box, click Define.
  3. Define your AOI on the map using the mouse. Double-click to complete your polygon AOI.

The Area of Interest pop-up appears for the newly created AOI.

  4. Do the following in the Area of Interest pop-up:
    1. Provide a name.
    2. Set the digital elevation in Base Type.
    3. Click Apply.

The area and volume calculations appear on the map tool. If you change Base Type and Unit, the calculation updates automatically.

  5. Optionally click the Add button Add AOI and repeat the steps above to define additional AOIs.
  6. Optionally click the AOI drop-down list, select an AOI, and click Delete Delete AOI to remove an AOI.
  7. Optionally click Options AOI Options and click Report to view a report for all the AOIs.

You can copy the content to other applications on the Volume Report dialog box.

  8. Optionally click Options AOI options, and click Export to export AOIs to a local file.

The AOIs are saved in your project.

Importing from a feature service

The steps below describe how to calculate the volume by importing AOIs from a feature service.

  1. Click the Calculate Volume map tool on the toolbar.
  2. Click Import from a Feature Service.
  3. On the Import Feature Layer dialog box, browse to the feature layer to be imported and select it.

    Only polygon layers are listed.

  4. Click Import.

The area and volume calculations appear on the map tool. If you change the Base Type and Unit, the calculation updates automatically.

Import from a local file

The steps below describe how to calculate the volume by importing an AOI from a local file.

  1. Click the Calculate Volume map tool on the toolbar.
  2. Click Import from a local file.
  3. Browse to the file containing your AOI and select it.

The AOI appears in the map viewer.
