Notes: Surface Water Intakes are a subset of this data and can be extracted by selecting SOURCE_TYPE = Surface Water. Sources located on U.S. Department of Defense bases and facilities have been removed from this dataset for operational security.</SPAN></P></DIV></DIV></DIV>
These data were created for North Carolina's Source Water Assessment Program and to assist governmental agencies and others in making resource management decisions through use of a Geographic Information System (GIS).

PWSS regions' GPS rover units data were transferred to a DWR server. Well locations were calculated by using Pathfinder software and base station files. The data were then converted to tabular text form so they could be imported into ArcGIS software for visual inspection purpose. The data were reviewed and necessary corrections made.

Water Supply Watershed Classification for Surface Waters

WS-I
Waters used as sources of water supply for drinking, culinary, or food processing purposes for those users desiring maximum protection for their water supplies. These waters are also protected for Class C uses. WS-I waters are those within natural and undeveloped watersheds in public ownership with no permitted point source (wastewater) discharges. All WS-I waters are HQW by definition.

WS-V has no categorical restrictions on watershed development or wastewater discharges unlike other WS classifications and local governments are not required to adopt watershed protection ordinances.
