Display Field: BASIN

Type: Feature Layer

Geometry Type: esriGeometryPolygon

Description: This data set is a complete digital hydrologic unit boundary layer to the Subwatershed (12-digit) 6th level for the State of North Carolina. This data set consists of geo-referenced digital data and associated attributes created in accordance with the "FGDC Proposal, Version 2.0 - Federal Standards For Delineation of Hydrologic Unit Boundaries 8/30/04"(http://www.ncgc.nrcs.usda.gov/products/datasets/watershed/). Delineation of coastal watershed boundaries presented unique issues within North Carolina. Coastal boundary lines were determined using NOAA Nautical charts to supplement the USGS base maps. The paper "Proposal to Change Hydrologic Unit Delineations over the Estaurine Waters of North Carolina", Randolph L. Ferguson, 3/30/2000, presents issues and the delineation process used in the coastal regions of North Carolina. Polygons are attributed with hydrologic unit codes for 4th level sub-basins, 5th level watersheds, 6th level subwatersheds, name, size, downstream hydrologic unit, type of watershed, non-contributing areas and flow modification. Arcs are attributed with the highest hydrologic unit code for each watershed, linesource and a metadata reference file.

Copyright Text: Funding for the North Carolina Watershed Boundary Dataset (WBD) was provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture-Natural Resources Conservation Service, North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (NCDENR)-Division of Coastal Management, and the US Geological Survey. Representatives from the NCDENR-Division of Coastal Management, NCDENR-Division of Land Resources-Geological Survey, NCDENR-Division of Water Quality, NCDENR-Division of Water Resources, NCDENR-Division of Water Resources-Groundwater Section, ITS-Center for Geographic Information and Analysis, US Geological Survey (USGS), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), and US Fish and Wildlife Service contributed a substantial amount of time and salary towards oversight and quality review of the dataset. Special recognition goes to Randy Ferguson (NOAA), Ted Mew (NCDENR), Kathleen Farrell (NCDENR), Alan Clark (NCDENR), and Silvia Terziotti (USGS) who contributed greatly of their time and expertise to guide this project and develop the science necessary to produce this Watershed Boundary Dataset. Additionally, a special thanks to Karen Hanson (USGS) and Sarah Walton (USGS) for all their hard work revising the WBD and adding the final touches.
